چکیده

The process of photosynthesis is facilitated in a plant by pores in its surface called stomata. When a particular stoma is open, CO2 is absorbed through its aperture, but H2O is also lost due to evaporation. Thus a plant will seek a stomatal aperture that balances its need for CO2 with its aversion to H2O loss. In order to visualize a particular leaf’s stomatal aperture distribution and how it changes with time, fluorescence data is collected at regular intervals as digital images, resulting in a video sequence. In observing such data, plant biologist have noticed in over 200 plant species that, even under spatially varying environmental conditions, stomatal apertures are often synchronized into spatially extended patches. This behavior is observed even though patchiness often results in less than optimal local CO2 uptake for fixed water loss. It is not understood why stomatal patchiness occurs, and it is the objective of this paper to shed light on this phenomenon via the analysis of one such fluorescence video. In order to perform our analysis, we first extract the patches from the video via a 3D, PDE-based segmentation method. With the segmented video in hand we then analyze the patches and their dynamics using a variety of measures.

Distorted Reflector Antennas: Radiation Pattern Sensitivity to the Surface Distortions

The high-frequency performance of the reflector antennas is mainly limited by the surface. It has been shown that distortions on different regions of the reflector surface can have different effects on the radiation performance. In other words, degradation of the radiation pattern due to the presence of surface distortions is sensitive to the location and behavior of the surface distortion prof...

Carbon catalyst derived from Himalayan pine for the C-N coupling of organic molecules leading to pyrrole formation

Carbon catalyst consisting of a hybrid structure made up of amorphous carbon and nanographite was prepared from the leaves of Pinus Roxburghii. The catalyst was prepared through sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid treatment of the dried pine leaves; and further functionalized with sulfuric acid treatment to incorporate the acidic functionalities. The synthesized catalyst was characterized by...

شواهد تغییر شکل کانی‌های رسی خاک در بعضی از واحدهای فیزیوگرافیکی غرب لنگرود، گیلان

The mineralogical composition of soils formed on phyllite and alluvium as well as examination of their mineral weathering characteristics should provide an insight into the stage of weathering. Three soil profiles from mountain, plain and low lands were selected. Based on XRD analysis, clay fractions were dominated by chlorite–vermiculite, vermiculite, HIV, illite, mica–vermiculite or mica-smec...

Changes of phenolic compounds and non-structural carbohydrates on alternate bearing cycle in ‘Kinnow’ mandarin trees

In this study we have demonstrated the variations of carbohydrates and phenolic compounds present in the leaves and stems of ‘Kinnow’ mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) trees in alternate bearing cycle and the possible involvement of these compounds to flower bud formation process. The amounts of these compounds were determined in the leaves and stems of “on” and “off” trees  monthly  from Nov...
